What makes a good photo

Any file works — the reading is what changes. These six things move the result more than anything else you can do.

  • Daylight, not a lampStand near a window in the middle of the day. A bulb adds its own colour to your skin, and that is exactly what the reading measures.
  • Not thisWhat a warm bulb doesThe same face under an indoor bulb. Everything shifts golden, so a cool colouring reads as warm. If the photo looks like this, take another by a window.
  • A plain wall behind youA bare wall in white, grey or any single colour. A busy room bounces colour back onto your skin.
  • Face filling the frameHead and shoulders, close enough that your face takes up most of the picture. A full-length shot gives too few pixels of skin.
  • Eyes and hairline visibleNo sunglasses, no hat, hair off your face. Your eyes and hair carry the contrast half of the reading.
  • No filters, light make-upBeauty filters and heavy foundation replace the very thing being measured. A plain camera photo, bare face if you can.

Why it changes so much

A colour close to your face bounces light back onto your skin. A colour that matches your natural warmth evens out your skin and lifts your eyes. A colour that fights it adds shadow under the chin and around the eyes.

This is why the same jumper can look wonderful on a friend and tired on you. Nothing is wrong with the jumper.

Spring colours are warm, fresh and full of light, like a garden in early morning sun. They have yellow or golden warmth in them and stay bright rather than dusty. Next to these colours your skin usually looks rested and even.

    The photo is opened on your device and the skin tones in the middle of the picture are measured. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Questions people ask

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The reading happens inside your own browser and the photo never leaves your device, so there is nothing to delete afterwards. The free report keeps no email address and no account. Buying the full report stores your season and the address Polar used for the receipt, so the link in that email opens your report again — and if you then ask for the lookbook, that one photo is sent to an image service to make the pictures, which you can delete from the report at any time.

Do I need to create an account?

No. There is no sign-up, no password and no email address needed to see your colours.

How accurate is the result?

It is a helpful starting point, not a measurement. Camera settings, indoor lighting and make-up all change the colours in a photo, so treat the answer as a suggestion and trust your own eyes in a mirror.

What if I do not want to use a photo?
