Skin tone and the colours that suit it

Your undertone is the colour underneath your skin, and it decides more about what suits you than how light or deep your skin is.

Two things get called skin tone and they are not the same. Depth is how light or dark your skin is. Undertone is which way its colour leans — gold and peach on the warm side, pink and blue on the cool side, or a mix of both. Depth is easy to see and tells you very little about colour. Undertone is harder to see and tells you nearly everything.

That is why the advice to wear certain colours because you are fair, or to avoid others because you are dark, so often falls apart. Every undertone occurs at every depth. A very fair person can be warm and a deep-skinned person can be cool, and the shades that suit them follow the undertone rather than the depth.

Below is each undertone with the colours that go with it. If you already know yours, go straight to it; if you do not, the three tests on any of those pages take about a minute.

Undertone gets you halfway

Knowing you are warm narrows the four colour seasons to two, and knowing you are cool narrows them to the other two. What decides between the remaining pair is depth and contrast: whether the shades that suit you are light or deep, clear or softened. That is the part a photograph answers faster than a mirror does.

Questions about skin tone and undertone

What is a skin undertone?

It is the colour underneath your skin rather than on the surface of it. Surface colour changes with the weather, with sleep and with age; the undertone stays where it is. It is what decides whether gold or silver looks right on you, and whether cream beats optical white.

Is undertone the same as skin tone?

No, and mixing the two is the most common confusion here. Skin tone is how light or deep your skin is. Undertone is which way its colour leans — warm, cool or neutral. Every undertone occurs at every depth, so knowing one tells you nothing about the other.

How do I find my undertone at home?

Three checks, all by a window rather than under a bulb: hold gold against silver, hold an optical white shirt against a cream one, and look at the veins on the inside of your wrist. Two of the three agreeing is enough to settle it, and each undertone page below explains what its own result looks like.

What if the tests disagree with each other?

A split result usually means a neutral undertone, which is a real answer rather than a failed test. It is also worth repeating the checks with a clean face in daylight, since makeup and warm indoor lighting both push the result.

Does my undertone give me my colour season?

It gives you half of it. Undertone narrows four seasons to two; depth and contrast decide which of those two you are. The free colour report does the whole thing at once, from a photo or from seven questions you can answer at home.
